My friend Ashleigh has tagged me to think of 6 quirky things about myself. So it may take me a while to think of 6. I'm sure there are 6 things, but I always have a hard time thinking of stuff like this...like when you have to share an embarrassing moment as a get to know you thing...I suddenly have never been embarrassed in my life! Anyway, here I go:
1- I would rather be pooped on, peed on or puked on than touch a bug in my garden. For instance, today I was working my vegetable garden, saw 2 slugs, avoided them and then squished another one I didn't see in my bare fingers as I was pulling a weed...I hadn't planned on weeding and therefore didn't have my gloves on me. I screamed like I was being attacked (the neighbors were probably wondering what was going on) and ran inside and washed my hands and feet (just in case they had been tainted too since I was in flip flops). On the other hand, this afternoon, Grace was supposed to be laying down for a nap and she came down the hall and gave me the biggest smile, clapped her hands like there was something to be applauded and then did a little spin in the doorway. As she spun, I could see that she had pooped and it was all up her back. No big deal, move in to the bathroom and clean it all up. No screaming. I have yet to find out if the poop got anywhere besides on her. I looked around her room and mine which are the only 2 locations she could have been when it happened but found nothing. Either way, I can still smell some of it on me somewhere...like a little smudge on my shirt or something. Not nearly as troublesome to me as touching a bug.
2- My favorite part of Beauty and the Beast is when he takes Belle to the library and the room is just full of books top to bottom. I dream of one day having one room in my house have bookshelves from floor to ceiling on every wall and they are just full of my favorite books. The quirk here is that when I read my books, I like them to still look brand new when I'm done reading so I am very careful not to break the binding and open it too far, etc. Because of that, I don't share my favorite books very well. I am not nearly as bad as I once was. I can lend them out much better now (thanks to being married to a guy who doesn't get nearly as attached to his "things" as I do) but if I had a hard-cover book that I absolutely loved, I would also buy it in paperback when it was available so that I could lend that copy. No hard feelings to anyone that I've lent paperback books to! I'm so much better now that I will lend out my hardbacks too!
3- I am quite persnickety about everything having a place to go in my house so that there is not just STUFF laying around my house with nowhere to go (there is always something laying around somewhere but I like to know it has a home). Even my DVD's are alphabetized so they don't just go on a shelf, they go in order on the shelf and in my defense, Grace can always find the video she is looking for because they are always in the same spot so it's not that crazy to do. If I ever get the aforementioned library, I'll probably alphabetize that too...or maybe even use the Dewey Decimal system!
4- I cannot sleep unless I have enough blanket weight on me. A sheet is just not enough. Even when it's so hot in the summer, I have to have a light blanket or quilt too.
5- I cannot sleep with socks on my feet. Ever.
6- I love the sound of the furnace running in the winter or the A/C in the summer. I love the white noise of it and for some reason I hate to hear it shut off. Luckily we now have an attic fan that I can hear pumping the hot air out in the summer and so there is white noise all afternoon from that!
Well, it only took me 2 hours to think of these. I am going to tag Shauna, Michelle, Jill, Bekah (you haven't blogged in long time!), Lauren, Rachel E. and anyone else who feels like sharing!

free cukes
I have cucumbers coming out my ears and it's way more than we can eat so if anyone wants some, come and get them!
A day full of firsts...
Yesterday was Grace's first day of preschool. I took her up to the school and dropped her off and then she came home on the bus (actually it's a van). She started to cry when she realized that I wasn't staying with her and I could hear her crying "MOMMY!" as I drove away. I considered going back to give her a hug and a kiss since I kind of had snuck away unseen but thought that would just make it worse. The teacher's note said that she cried for the first hour but then when they started to paint, she stopped crying and joined in. She said they also played in the gym after that and she loved that too. Very typical Grace though. She just needed something interesting enough to take her mind off the tears. After 30 minutes, she probably didn't even remember what she was crying about, but that she was crying about something so she should continue.

So starting on Monday, she will take the van to and from school. When she came home yesterday she was so proud to come home on the bus. Today when we got to school, her van was outside the school waiting for the teachers to come out and get the kids off so we opened the door and she climbed right in to her carseat there. She is already making it her own.

As for Lucas, he has cried both days when we left his sister at school. He was a little lost when we got home and she wasn't there to torture by following her around the house but he soon found something to do on his own. He is sooo in love with books lately. He will find one that he wants to read and either curl up in this chair with it or bring it to me and say "Buh buh buh". His Daddy is big on early literacy skills....

Yesterday was also Gracie's first day of dance class, with a new teacher (different from last year's because we had to move to evening classes due to pre-school). Her class started at 5:30 and at 4:00 I decided that she needed a really cute bag to tote her dance shoes to class with her in. Luckily I found these cute scraps of fabric in my stuff so I could make a cute one. I was rushed for time as I still had to get her dressed for dance, plus fed some dinner (including Lucas and myself). I think the bag turned out pretty darn cute for no measuring, very little pinning, having 2 kids in my lap and just making it all up as I went. I only had to unpick one thing...I sewed the straps on wrong but it was easily corrected.

The dancing story doesn't end as happily as the pre-school. She didn't want to participate (although I think it was hard for her to hear with all the other tap shoes tapping). I'm going to have to try a special program on her implant next week and see if it helps. The dance people have agreed to put in an audio system in the dance room for her (which was supposed to be in by this fall but it didn't work out like that) and as far as I know there is not a set time that it will happen yet. I am hoping for her teacher's sake that it will happen quickly. I am hoping that it will work out because she is in a show class this year (yikes!) which means that she is getting a costume and supposed to be in the recital in December and May. I really think she's capable of doing it but she has to be interested in it.....we'll just see what happens!

a day on the farm
Last week, we visited Aunt Stacy's farm and had so much fun! We got to see all kinds of animals, ride 4-wheelers, ride a swather (think Frank from the movie Cars) and ride a horse.
Here is Grace meeting Hatchet for the first time. I was surprised she was as frightened as she was. Usually, she has no fear but she was a little shy at first.

Next Grace asked to see the chickens. I thought our neighbors had a lot of chickens but not compared to this hen house!

Grace wasn't sure if she wanted to touch the little baby chick.

This was her reaction...

Lucas had fun chasing the cute little kitty (that kept running under my feet and I stepped on him atleast twice!)

Then we swang on this very very low swing. I had to hold my feet out straight the whole time and pump us with my upper body only. I probably only lasted like 2 minutes but it felt like 10 holding my legs out like that.

Grace was finally ready to ride Hatchet. She had a lot of fun on him and didn't want to be done riding.

Next we went to see the pigs. I don't know if you can see them through the holes or not but they were so cute!

Here is our ride on the swather. It was cutting the straw and leaving it in piles to be baled later by a different machine.

Here's the front view from the swather.

We had so much fun. Thanks Aunt Stacy (and her mom) for inviting us up for such an awesome day!

new boots and a bruise
Grace got some new boots the other day. Of course, they are Lightening McQueen boots. The first night she had them she would not take them off for anything! When I took them off for bedtime, she fussed and so I let her hold them in her arms. When I went in after she fell asleep, one of them was on her face. That night she woke up at 4:30 and was singing softly to her new boots while stroking them. When I went to get Lucas out of bed at 8:30, I found the following scenario:

Sometime during or at the end of her boot serenade, she put them back on but not before removing her pull-up which you can see there on the floor next to the bed. I have had to start putting shorts on under her nightgowns because that seems to trick her into thinking she can't remove the pull-up.
Here she is later in the day, still wearing her boots. Luke was having so much fun playing on her bed with her. He is very much a people person (like his dad). He gets so bored if Grace falls asleep in the afternoons and just follows me around the house whining (also like his dad...just kidding...kind of).

This is Lucas this morning with a puffy eyelid from his most recent spill. He always kind of has a purply look to his left eyelid but if you enlarge this picture, you can see that this time its a bruise and swelling. I felt like such an unfit mother since he fell off a hammock I was playing with he and Grace on. And once he got dumped, she got dumped and I had 2 screaming children in front of the MHS football coaching staff. Nice. Anyway, it was really puffy last night and I was afraid it might get worse and be all swollen shut this morning. Whew! It wasn't.

girls camp
I have been at girls camp this last week and it was so much fun, as always. On Wednesday the RS presidency came up to camp and helped us tie quilts for the humanitarian center and then we went to Echo Res. with them. We had lots of fun. This is Mara, Analee, Becky, and Steph.

In the middle you can see Cassandra with her life jacket up past her ears and to the right of her, Analee again.

This is Kilee and Analee coming out of the water.

Steph and Maria swam out the buoy. It was farther than it looked!

They decided to try to push Sharon under.

Synchronized swimmers. They were having so much fun doing this!

Buck was the only representative of the bishopric for bishopric night so he had to ride the bull (all the other bishops had to also) and the stake presidency scored them. He got two 8's and a 10.

Here we are in our camp shirts. They turned out so cute thanks to the Otternetts.

This is the last morning of camp...singing our camp song one last time at the end of our morning devotional.

This big lady showed up after our song. I'm assuming she's the one that snorted at me the first night there and scared me to death. I was sure she was going to come charging right through our tent. I heard her tromping through the bushes (it woke me up). After listening for a few minutes, I decided to peek out the window to get a look at who was making all the noise and right as I got to my knees something snorted at me...it seemed like inches from me. So I tried to wake up Sharon and had to pound on her to get her up. That woke up Ali. We all listened to it snort a few more times and finally walk away. Sharon had me in a death grip until it was finally gone so once my nerves had calmed from the initial scare, I wasn't able to peek out the window anymore to see it cause it had left.
